Phnom penh: Acting Head of State Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has publicly addressed recent misconceptions circulating in Thailand regarding Cambodia's funding for the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. He clarified that Cambodia did not utilize Chinese funds for organizing the event in 2023.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Hun Sen took to his official social media platforms to dispel misunderstandings after comments emerged from the Thai side, alleging that Cambodia hosted the SEA Games using Chinese money. He emphasized that while China, through President Xi Jinping, contributed to the construction of the Morodok Techo Stadium used for the games, the overall funding for the event came from Cambodia's own financial resources.
Hun Sen highlighted that the SEA Games involved various competitions held across Phnom Penh and other provinces, utilizing sports facilities built by the government post-1979 and older venues like the Olympic Stadium, left by King Norodom Sihanouk. He pointed out that the financial management was led by Samdech Tea Banh, along with DPM H.E. Aun Pornmoniroth and Minister H.E. Thong Khon, ensuring no reliance on foreign funds for the event.
He further detailed Cambodia's budgetary strategy, mentioning that the budget for the games was spread across several years, from 2018 to 2022, with an annual allocation of nearly $10 million, culminating in a total of around $50 million. For 2023, an additional $150 million was planned, though efficient management saw expenses limited to $118 million, covering all relevant costs, including accommodation and food for foreign athletes.
Hun Sen asserted Cambodia's commitment to solidarity within ASEAN by not charging participating countries, showcasing Cambodia's integrity and resourcefulness despite economic challenges. He also addressed derogatory remarks from some Thai individuals, urging a more respectful discourse, while expressing hope for Thailand's success in hosting the 2025 SEA Games.
Ultimately, Hun Sen's message aimed to protect Cambodian dignity and clarify the nation's independent financial handling of the SEA Games, while fostering a spirit of unity and respect within the region.
