Cambodia and Thailand to Develop Roadmap for Bilateral Relations

Cambodia: Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to move forward with developing a roadmap aimed at restoring mutual trust and normalising bilateral relations, following a recent meeting between Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Prak Sokhonn, and his Thai counterpart H.E. Sihasak Phuangketkeow in Brunei.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the roadmap, still under consideration by both sides, is expected to serve as a guiding framework for rebuilding confidence and strengthening cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. Central to this effort is a shared commitment to respect and fully implement the ceasefire agreement, seen as a key foundation for maintaining stability along the border.

Addressing reports by Thailand's The Nation regarding a possible unilateral withdrawal from the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU-2001) concerning the area of overlapping maritime claims between the two countries, Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn reiterated Cambodia's position previously stated in official releases issued on April 8 and April 24, 2026.

He emphasised that the MoU-2001 reflects genuine political will and a shared commitment by both countries to implement a mutually acceptable framework for the joint development of maritime resources, while advancing maritime boundary delimitation in accordance with international law. Cambodia expressed regret over any potential unilateral withdrawal by Thailand, describing it as a step away from the cooperative spirit underpinning the agreement.

Nevertheless, he reaffirmed Cambodia's firm and unwavering commitment to both the substance and spirit of the MoU, as well as to the goodwill and sincerity that led to its signing in 2001.
