Geneva:Cambodia has reiterated its dedication to human rights and urged for the safe return of displaced citizens at the UN Human Rights Council session.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Cambodia actively participated in the session held from September 7 to October 7, delivering 20 statements on various human rights topics. During a dialogue with Mr. Thomas Andrews, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia, the country emphasized its commitment to cooperation and the importance of an objective evaluation of its human rights progress.
The Cambodian delegation welcomed the Special Rapporteur's focus on the humanitarian issues resulting from the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. They called for the full implementation of the December 27, 2025 Joint Statement and supported efforts to facilitate the return of displaced civilians. Additionally, Cambodia urged the United Nations to engage more constructively to ensure the safe return of displaced Cambodians.
On the issue of online scams, Cambodia highlighted the necessity for international cooperation and collective action. The Phnom Penh Declaration, adopted at a recent conference, emphasizes disrupting criminal networks and protecting victims through enhanced international collaboration.
In relation to the UN Secretary-General's report on the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Cambodia reaffirmed its cooperation with the office, shaped by its historical context of war and division. National priorities remain peace, stability, development, rule of law, and improved economic well-being.
Cambodia also reiterated its adherence to international human rights treaties and ongoing legal reforms, stressing that individual cases should be assessed based on facts and due process. The country advocated for human rights assessments grounded in verified information and national circumstances.
Throughout the session, Cambodia collaborated with ASEAN and other international partners on multilateral cooperation in areas such as technical assistance, racial discrimination, and climate-related impacts. The Permanent Mission highlighted Cambodia's commitment to dialogue and cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, aiming to advance peace and human rights.
