Cambodia Requests Special JBC Meeting to Address Boundary Issues

Phnom penh: Cambodia has once again requested, through a Note Verbale dated Jan. 5, 2026, to convene a special meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) in the second or third week of January 2026 in Siem Reap province.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the request was made after the Thai side asked to postpone a meeting previously proposed by the Cambodian JBC for the first week of January, citing the reason of waiting for internal procedures.

The proposed agenda items for the upcoming special JBC meeting include discussing the survey and demarcation works and addressing issues related to Thai military forces conducting activities that violate Cambodia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. These activities include laying barbed wire, placing containers, planting Thai flags, building trenches, clearing and destroying the homes and property of Cambodian citizens, and prohibiting Cambodian citizens from returning to their homes.

The meeting will also focus on resuming the progress of surveys and the emplacement of temporary markers on the terrain in specified segments, including those between Boundary Pillars No. 42-47 in Banteay Meanchey province and between Boundary Pillars No. 52-59 in Battambang province. Additionally, discussions will cover the survey and emplacement of temporary markers in other border segments, such as those in the Boeung Trakuon area and various points in Pursat province.

The SSBA reaffirmed that the Cambodian JBC is committed to safeguarding the Cambodia-Thailand International Boundary, respecting international law, and adhering to historical agreements and documents. The Cambodian JBC intends to continue land surveying and boundary demarcation works with the Thai JBC to achieve lasting peace along the border, without recognizing any boundary alterations resulting from the use of force.

The SSBA called upon compatriots and the general public to trust the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Cambodian JBC, which prioritize the safeguarding of territorial integrity and national sovereignty with professionalism and responsibility.
