Phnom penh: Cambodia is set to host the 20th Francophonie Summit from November 15 to 16, 2026, marking a significant milestone as it welcomes fellow Francophone nations for the first time. As a member of the global Francophone community in the Indochina region, Cambodia is actively preparing for this event, which involves 90 member states and governments.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Cambodia has a proven track record in organising major international events. Over the past 25 years, it has successfully hosted ASEAN Summits three times between 2002 and 2022, as well as the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in November 2021. These gatherings concluded successfully and earned praise from participating countries, despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated a virtual ASEM Summit.
The ASEAN summits in 2012 and 2022 included participation from leaders of major powers, such as the President of the United States. The ASEM Summit, involving 30 European and 21 Asian countries, along with the ASEAN Secretariat, also produced significant outcomes, including key statements on post-COVID-19 recovery and connectivity.
Beyond these, Cambodia has hosted other major international events, like the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World in 2024 and the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games in 2023. For the upcoming Francophonie Summit, Cambodia is intensively preparing to welcome leaders and delegates from the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).
Cambodians are gearing up to greet nearly 396 million French-speaking people worldwide with a warm 'Bienvenue au Cambodge' (Welcome to Cambodia). Institutions and working groups are actively preparing to ensure the summit's success, focusing on themes of peace, prosperity, and stability.
Logistics, security, and event management teams are coordinating efforts to ensure a smooth event that enhances Cambodia's international standing. Hosting the Francophonie Summit will not only be a diplomatic milestone but also a testament to Cambodia's growing global credibility and capability.
Through its experience in hosting international events, Cambodia has shown its ability to coordinate and promote effective international cooperation. This summit offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen friendships, elevate national prestige, and reaffirm Cambodia's commitment to peace and sustainable prosperity.
