Phnom penh: The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) has successfully developed two new high-yield hybrid maize varieties, after six years of breeding and purification works. H.E. Touch Bun Hour, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), led a technical team on Mar. 25 to inspect and evaluate two new hybrid maize varieties at a demonstration farm in Thbong Khmum province.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, MAFF stated that the maize varieties, which are set to be officially released soon, include the codes BH-3577 and BH-4187. These varieties have been selected to withstand climate change and reduce the use of inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, aiming to ease the burden and increase income for farmers in challenging situations. The new varieties provide high yields and meet market demand during global crises.
After up to six years of breeding and purification by technician teams from the Ministry's General Directorate of Agronomy, this achievement highlights Cambodia's capacity for advanced research, according to H.E. Touch Bun Hour. "These two types of the best seeds clearly reflect 'Khmer can do it' and have the ability to independently produce the seeds without relying entirely on imports," he stated.
Cambodian maize is renowned for its quality and adaptability, being rich in carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins, and is suitable for various culinary uses. The main varieties grown in Cambodia include red, white, and violet maize. Agriculture remains a crucial pillar of the Cambodian economy, alongside tourism, construction, real estate, and garment manufacturing sectors.
According to the Cambodia Agriculture Survey 2023, maize was planted on approximately 96,000 hectares throughout the country. The MAFF is committed to further promoting research and development to ensure that all farmers have a better livelihood and can withstand global crises, stated H.E. Secretary of State.
