Kampot: A Cambodian lawmaker has called on rural farmers to prioritise organic vegetable cultivation to improve livelihoods and safeguard public health during a field visit to the country's coastal southwest. H.E. Van Dara, a Member of National Assembly for Kampot province constituency, met with local farmers in Trapeang Poun village, Banteay Meas district, Kampot province, on Sunday to assess regional crop production.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, during the visit, H.E. Van Dara urged the community to expand organic farming and livestock production. He emphasised that shifting away from chemical-intensive methods is essential for long-term economic stability and consumer safety. "Organic methods protect the health of people, livestock, and the environment while simultaneously reducing production costs for our farmers," he stated, praising local growers who have already adopted sustainable practices.
The lawmaker encouraged the public to support the domestic sector by purchasing locally grown, pesticide-free produce to bolster the national agricultural economy. Beyond agricultural policy, H.E. Van Dara issued a health advisory as the region experiences a period of unseasonably cold weather. He urged vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly and children, to remain vigilant against respiratory illnesses.
"With the current drop in temperature, it is vital to maintain high hygiene standards," he said. "In cases of severe illness, residents must seek immediate medical attention to prevent complications." To conclude the visit, the lawmaker provided financial assistance and traditional textiles (Sarong) to participating farming families as a gesture of support for their transition to organic agriculture.
