Chinese Companies Announce Investment Expansion Plans in Cambodia

Phnom penh: Three leading Chinese companies have announced plans to expand their investments in Cambodia's technology, telecommunications, and infrastructure sectors following meetings with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on July 17.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the discussions occurred during the Prime Minister's working visit to China, where he also participated in the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) from July 15 to 17. During a meeting with Mr. Xiao Ming, a representative of ZTE Corporation, the company outlined its global operations as a major supplier of telecommunications equipment and ICT solutions. Having operated in Cambodia for over 20 years, ZTE plans to further invest in the Cambodia Sovereign AI Foundation Model and the country's National AI Infrastructure and Ecosystem.

ZTE emphasized its role in Cambodia's digital development through rural telecommunications, fiber-optic network deployment, and broadband services. Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed ZTE's expansion plans and acknowledged its contributions to the telecommunications sector, reaffirming the government's dedication to digital transformation and ICT human resource development.

In another meeting, Mr. Ye Weidong, President of Shanghai Construction Group Co., Ltd. (SCG), highlighted SCG's involvement in Cambodian infrastructure since 2004, including roads, hydropower dams, and bridges. SCG expressed intentions to expand further in infrastructure development. The Prime Minister welcomed SCG's continued investment and reiterated the importance of infrastructure, encouraging SCG to train Cambodian engineers and skilled workers while collaborating with government institutions.

Dr. Jason Jie Zheng, Chairman of Shanghai Spacesail Technologies Co., Ltd., expressed interest in investing in satellite-based internet and communications services in Cambodia. The company operates the Qianfan Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Broadband Constellation, aimed at providing high-speed global internet connectivity. Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed this interest and emphasized the importance of high-quality internet services, noting the government's commitment to strengthening telecommunications infrastructure and developing a regulatory framework for satellite services.

The Prime Minister urged Shanghai Spacesail Technologies to engage with Cambodia's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to explore investment opportunities, especially focusing on extending satellite connectivity to remote rural communities responsibly.
