Hun Manet Guarantees Safety for Opposition Leader in Border Talks Invitation

Accra:Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has assured safety for opposition politician Um Sam An and his team, inviting them to Cambodia for discussions with the State Secretariat of Border Affairs' technical team. The talks are set to focus on documents and evidence related to the Cambodia-Thailand border between Boundary Markers 52 and 59.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Hun Manet addressed the matter in a social media post, highlighting that Um Sam An’s response to the invitation, which lasted about 80 minutes, did not clearly indicate acceptance. The discussions aim to offer transparency and accountability to the Cambodian public while addressing unresolved border issues.

Hun Manet emphasized that safety for Um Sam An and his team would be guaranteed during their stay in Cambodia. He suggested that if they distrust the Cambodian government, they could request safety monitoring by a foreign embassy or a civil society organization.

The Prime Minister stated that holding the discussions in Cambodia would enable participation from various groups, including journalists, political party representatives, civil society organizations, students, intellectuals, and the public, as well as supporters of Um Sam An. This setting is intended to provide transparency and allow on-site verification if necessary.

Expressing hope for Um Sam An’s participation, Hun Manet said that the discussions would reflect the government's commitment to transparency and accountability on the Cambodia-Thailand border issue. The decision to hold the discussions in Cambodia also tests the opposition politician's trust in the country's citizens.
