Industry Minister Calls for Cambodia-Japan Green SEZs to Link with Local SMEs

Phnom penh: H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, recently met with the ERIA Mission team to discuss the potential development of a Cambodia-Japan Green Special Economic Zone (SEZ). According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Mr. Yamada Yasuhiro, Senior Policy Fellow on Mekong Affairs at ERIA, presented findings from a study that evaluated potential SEZ locations. The study included an analysis of Cambodia's human resources, logistics, energy, governance, and land pricing compared to neighboring countries for green SEZ development. Mr. Yamada highlighted that, with the European Union's move towards carbon-based tariffs, Japanese companies operating in a Green SEZ powered by renewable energy and clean-production systems would have a competitive edge. Minister Vanndy expressed his approval of the findings and reiterated the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI)'s support. He briefed the Mission team on Cambodia's green-industry agenda, emphasizing MIST I's ongoing collaboration with UNIDO and the EU on Green SEZ development, as well as its support for quality infrastructure and industrial standards. The Minister strongly advocated for the integration of Japanese companies with Cambodian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the proposed development plan. He underlined the improved capabilities and competitiveness of domestic enterprises, which can help reduce costs and enhance supply-chain resilience. Mr. Yamada agreed that integrating SMEs would add significant value and positively impact Japanese investor interest.
