Phnom Penh:The traditional Khmer clothing known as the sbay has played a significant role in Khmer culture and heritage, evolving over many centuries. This cultural symbol, rooted in Khmer civilisation since the Funan period, continues to be an integral part of traditional customs and wedding ceremonies.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Dr. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, emphasized the importance of the sbay during a workshop on its role in Khmer traditions and weddings. She highlighted its widespread use in national attire, wedding ceremonies, and traditional artistic performances, notably mentioning the Preah Thaong Taong Sbay ritual.
The Minister described Khmer weddings and attire as a reflection of the nation's spirit and an ancient expression of its civilisation, noting the evolution of wedding traditions over generations. A distinctive feature of Khmer society, as she pointed out, is the high value placed on women, exemplified by the tradition of the groom holding the bride's sbay during ceremonies.
Dr. Phoeurng Sackona cited evidence from the Angkorian period, such as stone inscriptions and carvings, which illustrate the cultural, artistic, and economic achievements of Khmer civilisation. She stressed the importance of preserving Khmer cultural heritage, which encompasses traditional practices, sculptures, archaeological artefacts, and living traditions.
She urged those in the cultural sector, including artists and beauty professionals involved in weddings, to view their work not just as an occupation but as a role of cultural ambassadorship. She encouraged them to safeguard Khmer heritage, understand its history, and foster creativity rooted in traditional forms, warning against adaptations that could dilute Khmer identity.
The historical significance of the sbay is documented through various sources, including statues, inscriptions, carvings, manuscripts, palm-leaf texts, and ancient paintings, showcasing its evolution throughout different historical periods.
