MLMUPC Outlines Sihanoukville Port Expansion Project

Sihanoukville: The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction (MLMUPC) has announced a major expansion project of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, including the construction of a deep-water container terminal.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Ministry's announcement issued on Jan. 19 detailed that the terminal development will occur in three phases between 2023 and 2030. This ambitious project will be funded through concessional loans from the Japanese government.

Once the expansion is completed, the upgraded port will accommodate container vessels of up to 160,000 deadweight tons (15,000 TEUs), enabling direct international shipping without depth limitations. This development is expected to significantly boost the port's capacity and operational efficiency.

The MLMUPC has also established a dedicated working group, which will collaborate with the Sihanoukville Provincial Administration to inspect, measure, and identify residents and structures within the development area. This coordination is crucial to ensure the smooth progress of the expansion project.

The deep-water terminal is a key component of Cambodia's broader strategy to enhance port capacity, increase international trade, and establish Sihanoukville as a central logistics hub in Southeast Asia.
