Phnom Penh Gears Up for Grand Sankranta Celebrations at Wat Phnom and Walk Street

Phnom Penh: The Phnom Penh capital city is buzzing with excitement as authorities announce a multi-day celebration of Sankranta, the Khmer Traditional New Year, at two iconic locations: Wat Phnom and Walk Street. Residents and tourists alike are invited to immerse themselves in the vibrant festivities, which promise a rich blend of tradition and entertainment.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the historic Wat Phnom will host a three-day celebration from April 14 to 16, 2025. Mrs. Dor Samphors, Spokesperson for the Phnom Penh municipal administration, outlined the programme for each day. The first day will feature the welcoming of the New Year's deity, a sacred Buddha statue procession, the creation of sand stupas, and a traditional Buddha bathing ceremony. On the second day, attendees can enjoy traditional performances, engage in folk games such as "Chol Chhoung" (scarf throwing), "Leak Kanseng" (scarf hiding), and tug-of-war, and be entertained by classical and contemporary music. The third day will conclude with traditional dances, various entertainment programmes, an exhibition of Khmer cultural artifacts, and a display of Khmer cuisine.

Meanwhile, Walk Street will host cultural activities for five days, from April 12 to 16, 2025, spanning from the Royal Palace to Wat Phnom Historical Site along Preah Sisowath Quay. Mr. Pich Ponreay, head of entertainment for Walk Street, shared that the street will feature traditional games and performances, including "Leak Kanseng," tug-of-war, Khmer shadow puppetry (Lakhon Sbek), Lakhon Khol (masked theatre), Lakhon Yike (Yike theatre), Chapei Dang Veng (Cambodian guitar) musical performances, dances, and a Khmer traditional costume show.

Officials are encouraging citizens to participate in the celebrations, highlighting the importance of preserving and promoting Cambodia's cultural heritage. These events aim to foster national pride and attract both domestic and international tourists. Mr. Sorn Sopheak, head of the Wat Phnom Sankranta organising committee, confirmed that activities at Wat Phnom will run from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, offering a mix of traditional and modern entertainment.

To accommodate the expected crowds and enhance the festive atmosphere, the Phnom Penh administration has extended the Walk Street programme to five days. Mr. Chea Khema, Governor of Khan Daun Penh, assured the public of the local authorities' preparedness to ensure a safe and smooth event, with security personnel deployed to maintain order and manage traffic flow.
