The Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah and Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim today witnessed the signing ceremony of the memorandum of agreement (MoA) between Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OXCIS), United Kingdom.
Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara were greeted on arrival by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin.
UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff, in his speech, said UPSI and OXCIS have joined forces to produce the ‘Qari-in-Residence’ initiative.
“This novel programme will see selected students from UPSI's esteemed Tahfiz and Turath Islami programme to spend the entire holy month of Ramadan at OXCIS, beginning next year,” he said.
He said through the programme, the students will spend time with the local community at OXCIS and in Oxfordshire via several community engagement and knowledge transfer activities which will be an added value to the students.
Hence, Md Amin said he firmly believes that by immersing in experiential programmes that transcend conventional classrooms, a new generation of professional huffaz (memorisers of the Quran) will emerge, and dedicated to elevating the stature of the Quran from all angles.
The MoA was signed by Md Amin who represented UPSI and OXCIS director Dr Farhan Ahmad Nizami.
Sultan Nazrin and Tuanku Zara were also given a briefing on the Tahfiz and Turath Islami Education Institute.
