Ukraine Open to NATO-Style Security Guarantees Amid Peace Talks

Berlin: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday that Ukraine is prepared to accept security guarantees modeled after NATO's Article 5 as part of a compromise in ongoing peace negotiations. This development was reported by the Ukrinform news agency.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's initial desire to join NATO, highlighting that such membership would provide genuine security assurances. However, he acknowledged that some partners in the United States and Europe did not support this direction. Zelensky proposed that Article 5-like guarantees from nations such as the United States, European countries, Canada, and Japan could prevent further incursions by Russian forces. He noted that this proposal already represents a compromise from Ukraine's side.

Although Zelensky was not prepared to reveal specific details about the proposed security guarantees, he mentioned that more information would be available in the coming days. His visit to Berlin on Sunday included discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders.

Additionally, the German newspaper Bild suggested that Zelensky might also engage in talks with representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump, though no further details were provided.
