Cambodian Civilian Areas Under Continued Thai Military Shelling

Banteay meanchey: Thai military forces continued their artillery attacks on Cambodian civilian areas in Banteay Meanchey province on Friday morning.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the Ministry of National Defence issued press releases detailing the incidents that occurred in the early hours of the day.

The ministry reported that at 7:42 a.m., Thai forces launched five artillery shells into Banteay Meanrith village, located in Kok Romiet commune, Thmar Pouk district. A subsequent attack followed approximately two hours later at 9:45 a.m., targeting the Boeung Trakoun area within the same commune. These actions have been described by the Ministry of National Defence as indiscriminate attacks, constituting a significant violation of international humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights H.E. Volker Trk has voiced his concerns regarding the deployment of air strikes and heavy weaponry in densely populated areas amid the ongoing conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. He highlighted the necessity for compliance with international humanitarian law, emphasizing the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. Trk further reiterated that military operations must adhere to the principles of distinction, necessity, and proportionality, with all necessary precautions taken to safeguard civilian lives.
