First Russian Tour Operators Arrive in Siem Reap to Tap High-Spending Travellers as Cambodia Boosts Quality Tourism

Siem reap: The first delegation of Russian tour operators touched down in Siem Reap on Thursday evening, marking a strategic push to lure high-value Russian tourists to Cambodia's cultural heartland.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, State Secretary H.E. Neang Mao of the Ministry of Tourism welcomed the group on behalf of Minister H.E. Huot Hak, confirming the visit is a familiarisation trip to assess and later promote Siem Reap's offerings to Russian travellers. 'This is a highly positive sign for Cambodian tourism,' H.E. Neang Mao said. 'It reflects growing international confidence in Cambodia at a time when the Royal Government is strictly focused on developing tourism with an emphasis on quality, safety, and warmth for international guests.'

The State Secretary backed private-sector efforts targeting Russia and other international markets, calling the initiative a key step toward attracting high-yield tourists to energise the national economy. Local officials view the arrival as a milestone for Cambodia-Russia ties, particularly in tourism, investment, and cultural exchange.

Building on earlier discussions this year between Tourism Minister H.E. Huot Hak and Lotus Group CEO Vladimir Palancica on attracting Russian tourists and investors, the visiting delegation underscored Cambodia's strong appeal as a premier Southeast Asian destination, citing its ancient temples, pristine coastlines, safety, and hospitality. The growing potential to attract high-spending Russian travelers seeking luxury wellness retreats, beach resorts, extended stays, and exclusive private travel experiences was also highlighted.

Russians usually travel for five to seven days, with some extending to one or two months, delivering a major financial lift to local hotels, restaurants, transport, and handicrafts.
