Industry Minister Commends Toyota Success, Calls for Stronger SME Linkages

Phnom penh: H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, received representatives of Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. and Toyota (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. on Thursday. They briefed him on Toyota's local production progress.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Toyota has begun producing 'Made in Cambodia' Hilux and Fortuner vehicles over the past two years. The company's monthly production expanded significantly from 27 units initially to more than 400 units. Notably, 77 percent of Toyota's workforce consists of graduates from Cambodia's TVET institutions. Government incentives have played a role in reducing prices and increasing the proportion of locally assembled vehicles in its sales.

H.E. Hem Vanndy praised Toyota's rapid success in Cambodia, noting the company's strong performance within a short period. He highlighted that the progress reflects effective collaboration between the private sector and the Royal Government, particularly in promoting local production, skills development, standards, and industrial growth.

The Minister encouraged Toyota to strengthen linkages with Cambodian SMEs by exploring opportunities for local firms to supply automotive parts and services. He emphasized the need for expanded customer education on vehicle safety, maintenance, repair services, and advanced vehicle features through short videos and digital platforms.

Furthermore, he urged Toyota to continue working with the Institute of Standards of Cambodia to enhance automotive standards and compliance. Toyota reiterated its commitment to collaborating with Cambodian SMEs, service partners, and relevant government bodies. The company currently partners with 22 service partners across the capital and provinces and plans to continue training young Cambodian technicians through its Toyota Training Centre.
