MRC says China Postpones Plan to Reduce Dam Outflows

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) said Monday that China’s Ministry of Water Resources had postponed a plan to curtail outflows of water from its Jinghong dam.

“China’s plan to reduce outflows from its Jinghong hydropower station in Yunnan province has now been rescheduled to the end of August,” a statement said.

Issued by the MRC Secretariat in Vientiane, the statement said the ministry cited “technical preparation” for the delay but had not yet specified a new date.

In a notification dated Wednesday last week, the ministry said outflows would be reduced between July 31 and Aug. 20 for “power grid construction,” the MRC statement said.

According to its online source, the MRC is an intergovernmental organisation for regional dialogue and cooperation in the Lower Mekong River Basin, established in 1995 based on the Mekong Agreement between Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. The organisation serves as a regional platform for water diplomacy and a knowledge hub of water resources management for the sustainable development of the region.
