Cambodia Embarks on Nationwide EV Charging Infrastructure Expansion

Phnom penh: Cambodia plans to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide to support citizens' mobility and business activities, particularly in the transport sector, by reducing operating costs and promoting the use of clean energy. As of 2025, clean energy accounted for approximately 63 percent of the national power grid, stated H.E. Keo Rottanak, Minister of Mines and Energy.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the vast majority of electricity supplied through the national grid comes from clean energy. This achievement is seen not only as a success for the electricity sector but also as an advantage that can be leveraged to promote development in other sectors. The Minister highlighted this at the grand opening ceremony of ZO Motors' charging station and the launch of its latest EV models in Phnom Penh on January 8. He emphasized that the trial operation of a large charging station in Phnom Penh signifies a concrete step toward implementing the Royal Government's policy on electricity sector reform in support of socio-economic development.

The use of clean energy is said to reduce costs for businesses and households, while also contributing to environmental benefits by reducing gas emissions. Relevant institutions, including the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and the Council for the Development of Cambodia, have collaborated to introduce incentive policies supporting EV adoption, battery-powered vehicles, and vehicle assembly.

The Electricity Authority of Cambodia has recently announced plans to deploy hundreds of EV charging stations nationwide, responding to the rapidly growing use of electric vehicles in the country. As of September 2025, Cambodia had a total of 10,568 registered electric vehicles, as reported by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

Meanwhile, ZO Motors Cambodia is set to roll out 300 fast-charging stations across the nation. Of these, 30 stations were established in 2025, with plans for 200 more in 2026 and an additional 70 scheduled for 2027.
