Floating Community of Kampong Phluk Prepares for Holiday Tourists

Kampong Phluk:As Cambodians get ready for Pchum Ben, a significant traditional holiday involving family gatherings and religious rituals, the floating community of Kampong Phluk in Siem Reap province is preparing for an influx of both domestic and international travelers.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Kampong Phluk, located in Prasat Bakong district on the shores of Tonle Sap Lake, has become a vibrant destination. In addition to the renowned Angkor temple complexes in Siem Reap, this eco-destination offers visitors a serene escape with fresh air, lush greenery, and unique aquatic landscapes.

During the high-water monsoon season, which aligns with Pchum Ben, Tonle Sap Lake's waters rise, creating a giant mirror effect that reflects the village's iconic high-stilted wooden houses and submerged forests. Mr. Kong Thanh Long, from the Kampong Phluk Ecotourism Community, emphasized that the area reaches its peak during this time, with the community fully prepared to welcome holiday visitors.

The village's stilted homes, standing above the high tide, present a remarkable sight for visitors. Tourists can explore the area via small boats and larger passenger vessels along designated waterways, entering the vast flooded forest, which is a rare ecological treasure of the Tonle Sap biosphere. Local organizers have improved safety standards, optimized boat services, and enhanced sanitation protocols to ensure a seamless experience for tourists.

Visitors to Kampong Phluk can enjoy more than scenic boat rides; they can observe a centuries-old lifestyle intimately connected to the lake's water levels. Attractions include floating schools, pagodas, and adaptive architectural styles. Guided paddle-boat tours through submerged forests offer encounters with local birdlife and refreshing breezes, while guests can savor fresh seafood and purchase handcrafted souvenirs.

With favorable water conditions and increasing awareness of the area's ecotourism potential, Mr. Kong Thanh Long expects a significant rise in tourist numbers this year, which will directly support local incomes and contribute to a resilient economy.
